Traditional fishing in the Strait of Messina is a Slow Food Presidium

Traditional Fishing in the Straits of Messina has recently gained a place of honour among the Presidia Slow Fooda significant recognition that aims to support and enhance the work of local fishermen, protect the cultural heritage of the marine area between Sicily and Calabria, and promote the social and economic value of typical local fish products.
The new Slow Food presidium aims to promote selective and seasonal fishing practices, adapting techniques and tools according to the target species and the time of year. This approach aims to preserve the life cycle of marine species and maintain the ecological balance of the Strait of Messina.
The inclusion of traditional fishing in the Slow Food Presidia list will also encourage new business opportunities, including the development of fishing-tourism activities that will allow fishermen to increase their economy without betraying maritime culture and tradition, without massively and destructively exploiting the resources of the sea, and by encouraging a return to traditional techniques.
The announcement of the presidium will be celebrated with the event 'The Sea Calls', from 17 to 19 May at the Monte di Pietà, a historic building in Messina. The event will include thematic exhibitions, the screening of documentaries and a series of food and wine events, forums and taste workshops dedicated to traditional fishing.
Traditional fishing in the Strait of Messina, now under the aegis of the Slow Food Presidia, represents an exemplary combination of tradition and sustainability. Messina is preparing to become a reference point for sustainable tourism and marine conservation.
