Historical Trains of Taste 2024: the wonders of Sicily on a journey back in time
For the sixth consecutive year, the Treni Storici del Gusto (Historic Trains of Taste) return to Sicily: the initiative that allows visitors to discover Sicily through the window of a vintage train. Thanks to the collaboration between the State Railways Foundation, the Regional Department of Tourism, Sport and Entertainment, and FS Treni Turistici Italiani, it will be possible to live a unique experience on board vintage trains through the most scenic lines of the island.
From 14 September to 8 December 2024, the Historic Trains of Taste will travel through some of Sicily's most iconic locations, with 33 not-to-be-missed events. Among the scheduled destinations: Agrigento and the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples, Santo Stefano di Camastra and Caltagirone with tours to discover the ceramics, Siracusa and the historic centre of ancient Ortigia, Castelvetrano and the majestic Selinunte Archaeological Park, and baroque Modica for the annual chocolate festival. Departures will be from major Sicilian cities such as Palermo, Messina and Cataniathus offering widespread coverage of the entire regional territory.
The sixth edition of the Treni Storici del Gusto also renews the collaboration with the Ferrovia Circumetnea, which allows travellers to reach the centre of Bronte, known for its pistachio production, using Fce railcars.
Among the vintage vehicles that will be part of the Treni Storici del Gusto 2024 are the legendary ‘terrazzini’ carriages of the 1930s, a constant presence on the Sicilian railway routes of the 1950s, restored and re-proposed in a touristic key to make travellers relive the wonder of an authentic journey back in time among the scents and colours that this splendid island offers.
The 2024 edition will not forget bicycle enthusiasts: each historic train will be equipped with a baggage car with racks, capable of carrying up to 50 bicycles, allowing cycle tourists to explore Sicily's beauty on their bikes.
‘This well-established initiative, rewarded by public acclaim - said Schifani - aims to enhance itineraries on Sicily's most scenic railway lines and gives the opportunity to get to know our rich territory from different perspectives. It is also through events such as this one that we want to expand an attractive tourist offer, which aims at a greater deseasonalisation of flows.’
