Agrigento will be the Italian Capital of Culture in 2025

Agrigento is world-famous for its extraordinary cultural richness, which is reflected in its ancient temples, historical monuments and works of art. The city of Agrigento is best known for its magnificent Doric temples, located in the Valley of the Temples, which in 1997 was listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.UNESCO. The Valley of the Temples is one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe, with well-preserved temples dating back to the 5th century BC. These include the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Juno and the Temple of Hercules, all examples of Doric architecture. But Agrigento is not only ancient history: the city also boasts a lively contemporary cultural scene, with numerous events such as the Almond Blossom Festival that celebrates the blossoming of the almond trees in February.
Confirming the city's great cultural wealth, Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano made it official that Agrigento will be the Italian Capital of Culture 2025! The proclamation took place in Rome in the Sala Spadolini of the Italian Ministry of Culture. The decision was taken by a commission chaired by Davide Maria Desario and composed of 7 experts in the management of cultural heritage, the arts, and territorial valorisation. This important recognition represents a real springboard for the city and the entire region of Sicily. It is a prestigious recognition that brings with it multiple benefits, such as the possibility of attracting tourists and investments, as well as promoting culture and art.
Agrigento beat off competition from nine other cities, including Aosta, Assisi, Asti, Bagnoregio, Monte Sant'Angelo, Orvieto, Pescina, Roccasecca and Spoleto. It is the second Sicilian city to obtain this prestigious title after Palermo in 2018.
"It is with great satisfaction that I welcome the news of Agrigento's designation as Italian Capital of Culture for 2025. The government of the Region is ready to lend its support and play its part so that Agrigento can fully grasp all the growth opportunities offered by this prestigious role. A title that the city deserves not only for its history, its monuments, and its authors that are the heritage of the entire country and of Europe'. commented Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani.
The city of Agrigento will receive a state contribution of one million euros, which it will have to use to enhance and exalt its qualities and characteristics also through cultural initiatives and events dedicated to citizens and visitors for a whole year.
The nomination of Agrigento as the Italian Capital of Culture 2025 is a great victory for the city and for Sicily, which will be able to show the world their extraordinary cultural wealth and millenary history. It will be an opportunity to promote culture, art and heritage, involving many citizens and visitors.
