Also this year, were awarded the Bandiere Verdi 2023, the award that recognises the best child-friendly beaches in Italy. The updated list of winners was unveiled by Italo Farnetani, creator of the project, university professor of paediatrics and president of the International Workshop of Green Flags.

Green Flags are an important recognition for resorts that offer services and amenities specifically designed for the needs of families with children. Green Flag award-winning beaches are selected according to strict criteria that take into account not only the presence of services and amenities for parents, but also fundamental elements for the safety and enjoyment of children. The clean, shallow water close to the shore, the presence of sand suitable for building castles and towers, and the offer of children's games are just some of the features that are assessed when selecting the winning beaches. In addition, the presence of qualified lifeguards to ensure the safety of bathers is an essential element in obtaining the prestigious award.

The initiative involves Italian and foreign doctors, who collaborated to nominate and evaluate ideal family destinations. Thanks to their experience and expertise, the beaches that best meet the needs of children and their families were selected, offering a safe, fun and suitable environment for children's activities. In the 2023 edition of Green Flags, as many as 146 Italian beaches were awarded, 18 of which are located in Sicily. This once again confirms the great natural and tourist heritage that Sicily offers families, with a variety of coastal destinations that meet the requirements of young and old alike.
